Although reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology is widely used in seawater desalination, it also faces a number of challenges and limitations, some of the major issues include:

The RO process requires the application of high pressure to push seawater through a semi-permeable membrane, thereby separating the salts. Technical applicability
RO technology is very effective in treating seawater desalination, but it is not the best choice in all cases. For some areas, especially where water is scarce and economic resources are limited, other freshwater production technologies may need to be considered in combination.
