From Price Disruptor to Technology Competitor: The Evolution of China‘s RO Membrane Industry

A quiet shift has been underway in the global membrane market over the past two decades. China has moved from being a nearly 100% importer of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to a major producer that now supplies domestic and international markets at scale. What’s more significant than the volume, however, is the capability that now sits behind it.

The Early Years: A Reliance on Imports

In the early 2000s, the Chinese membrane market was dominated by foreign brands such as DuPont FilmTec, Hydranautics, and Toray, which together held over 80% of the domestic share. For a long time, “domestic membrane” was often associated with lower quality, shorter lifespan, and unstable performance. The price gap was wide—but so was the performance gap.

For end users, choosing domestic meant accepting trade-offs. For the industry, it meant a long road of R&D, trial runs, and incremental improvement.

The Turning Point: Local Manufacturing Takes Hold

By the mid-2010s, a handful of domestic players began to gain traction in municipal wastewater and industrial reuse applications. The first major breakthrough came from ultrafiltration membranes, where local manufacturing brought costs down significantly, making MBR technology more accessible to a broader range of projects.

Government policy also played a role: starting in 2010, national development plans began to list membrane technology as a strategic R&D priority, channeling resources into both research and early-stage industrialization.

Still, as late as 2015, over 60% of high-end membrane components were still imported. Local products were considered usable, but not yet fully competitive at the top end.

The Shift: From “Good Enough” to “Truly Competitive”

The real turning point came with advancements in materials science. Domestic production of key materials such as polysulfone and PES, combined with innovations in surface modification and coating technologies, led to significant improvements in fouling resistance, cleaning intervals, and overall membrane lifespan.

By 2025, the performance gap had narrowed dramatically:

  • Salt rejection rates for locally made RO membranes reached 99.5% or higher.
  • Lifespans matched those of imported membranes at approximately five years.
  • Prices dropped to about one-third of comparable imported products.

Today, China accounts for over 80% of the domestic membrane market, up from 20% two decades ago. The membrane industry‘s total output value has surpassed RMB 500 billion, and domestic supply now covers the majority of the country’s water treatment needs.

Looking Ahead: A Global Role

With the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) identifying seawater desalination as a strategic priority, membrane technology is moving from an environmental compliance tool to a core component of national infrastructure. Chinese membrane manufacturers are no longer just serving domestic demand; they are increasingly present in markets across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.
