World Environment Day | A Drop of Water’s ‘Membrane Magic’ Rebirth Journey

Hello everyone, I am a drop of water.

Don’t be fooled by my crystal clear, carefree appearance today. Just a few hours ago, I was trapped in a dark, smelly industrial wastewater pipe, covered in oil, salts, and heavy metals. Even I myself despised what I had become.

I thought my fate was to be discharged into a river and slowly diluted, or simply dried up by the sun in an evaporation pond. But then, one day, I was pumped into a magical “membrane magic factory” – and there, I underwent a complete rebirth.

Today, on World Environment Day, I want to tell you my story. I hope you will know: behind every drop of clean water, there may be an amazing set of membrane technologies.


 Stop 1: Bar Screen & Equalization Tank – “A Rough Bath”

When I first arrived at the plant, I was carrying all kinds of “big luggage”: suspended particles, sand, even some accidentally dropped fibers. The first thing that greeted me was a bar screen – like a giant comb that stopped my big pieces of luggage.

Then I jumped into the equalization tank. It’s like a big bathtub where brothers and sisters from different times and different workshops all gather together, and our water quality and flow are mixed evenly. Although this step doesn’t involve “membrane magic”, it is very important – it prevents the subsequent treatment processes from being overwhelmed by sudden surges or toxic shocks.

> Engineers in the plant call this “equalization and homogenization”. I think of it as “let’s all make friends first, then get clean together.”


 Stop 2: Ultrafiltration (UF) – “A Nanoscale Security Check”

After leaving the equalization tank, I was still carrying tiny particles, colloids, and some bacteria. That’s when I met the first real “membrane magic” – the ultrafiltration membrane.

The pore size of a UF membrane is only 0.01–0.1 microns – about one tenthousandth of a human hair. You can imagine it as an extremely fine mesh screen, or a security gate that only allows small molecules to pass.

  •  Water molecules and beneficial minerals can pass through easily;
  •  Suspended solids, bacteria, and large organic molecules are all blocked.

The moment I passed through the UF membrane, my originally turbid body became clear and bright. Although dissolved salts still remained, to the naked eye I already looked no different from tap water.

> After this checkpoint, I am called “UF permeate” – clean, but not yet pure enough.


 Stop 3: Reverse Osmosis (RO) – “HighPressure Magic Separation”

The real “magic” happens at the next stop: reverse osmosis.

The membrane here is even more powerful, with a pore size of only 0.0001 microns (0.1 nanometers) – thousands of times finer than a UF membrane. It can block almost all dissolved salts, heavy metals, and organic compounds – even ions cannot escape.

But fineness alone is not enough – reverse osmosis also requires the help of a highpressure pump. I was pressurized to tens of bars (several hundred psi) and forced toward that semipermeable membrane.

  •  Most water molecules pass through the membrane under pressure, becoming pure product water;
  •  Salts, heavy metals, and remaining organic matter are concentrated on the other side and discharged as concentrate.

When I finally crossed the RO membrane, I felt as if I had unloaded all my burdens – my salinity dropped from tens of thousands of mg/L to just a few tens of mg/L, almost free of any impurities.

> Now I am called “RO permeate” – even purer than bottled purified water.


 The End: Reuse & Crystallization – “Either Reborn, or Become Salt”

After coming out of reverse osmosis, I became highquality reclaimed water. Some of my brothers and sisters are sent directly back to the factory’s cooling towers, boiler makeup water systems, or used for landscaping and flushing. Some are even sent further to evaporation and crystallization, where the last “salts” inside me are separated and turned into industrial salts that can be reused as resources.

As for me, I returned to the production line with the medal of “zero liquid discharge”.


 A Drop of Water’s Reflection: “Membrane Magic” is not Magic, it’s Technology

To be honest, before going through this rebirth journey, I never knew that human membrane technology had become so powerful.

  • Ultrafiltration is like a meticulous cleaner, sweeping away large particles and bacteria from my body;
  • Reverse osmosis is like a picky chemist, squeezing out every last trace of salt from me;
  • Plus softening, tubular microfiltration, evaporation crystallization – a complete membrane integration process can achieve zero liquid discharge of industrial wastewater and recycle water resources.

On this World Environment Day, I want to say, on behalf of all the water drops that have experienced “membrane rebirth”:

> Every drop of water deserves to be cherished. And technology makes that cherishing possible.


 Afterword: What Can We Do?

As environmental engineers, power plant technicians, or simply ordinary water users, we may not deal with membranes every day, but we can still:

  • Support water conservation – wasting one drop of clean water means creating one more drop of wastewater;
  • Promote zero discharge – encourage industrial parks and power plants to adopt membrane integration processes, turning wastewater into resources;
  • Trust in technology – UF, RO, MBR… these “membrane magics” are not fairy tales; they are quietly giving wastewater a new life in the real world.

The drop of water you save today may, through “membrane magic”, return to your cup tomorrow.
